Flat sheets

A good quality sheet feels fantastic when you curl up in bed. If you consider that you spend a third of your day curled up in your bed, you should do your best to ensure your bed is a luxurious and comfortable retreat. But with so many sheeting options on the market, how do you go about choosing which bedding is best?

What is a flat sheet?

Flat sheets are used on top of fitted sheets on your bed. Usually, a fitted sheet is used on the mattress, then a flat sheet is added on top of it so you can lie under the flat sheet. Most people then add a duvet, blanket or quilt over the top of it for warmth.

How should you choose a flat sheet?

Pick a good fabric

Cotton is a great fabric choice for sheeting. 100% cotton is soft, comfortable and affordable. Egyptian cotton sheeting is a more premium choice, and is generally softer and more durable.

You can also opt for cotton and polyester blends known as polycottons. This fabric is usually not quite as soft as cotton, and can feel synthetic, but the addition of polyester makes the fabric inexpensive, more durable and less likely to wrinkle. Because polycotton bedding is so affordable and doesn’t need ironing, it’s a popular choice amongst students and young singles.

Check the thread count

Thread count is important, but it isn’t everything. Don't assume that a sheet with a low thread count is a low-quality sheet. Some 200-count cotton sheets are very comfortable and soft.

Good quality sheets have a thread count of 200 or more. If you can, go for a sheet of between 300 and 400 thread count.

Select a weave

Flat sheets have different weaves. A sateen weave has a very soft and luxurious feel. It can be less durable than other weaves though. A percale weave is one of the most popular weaves. This plain weave is less ‘shiny’ than a sateen weave, and is often used for sheets. A combed cotton weave is used for winter bedding. This has a fluffier feel to it. Sheets made with combed cotton trap heat in and are warmer in winter.

Check the length and width of your mattress

Sheets are available in a range of sizes to fit standard mattresses. Flat sheet sizes range from single to king. You will find single and double flat sheet sizes, as well as three quarter, queen and king flat sheet sizes. If you are particularly tall, you may have an extra length mattress. In this case, be sure to get flat sheet bedding in extra-length sizes.

Pick a colour

Bed sheets come in a wide range of colours from whites and creams to darker colours like blue and black. For a classic look that never goes out of style, white is always a good option. But you can also select sheets that suit the colour of your other bedding, like your duvets and blankets.
