Embrace the dark side

We all know how beautiful a light and airy bedroom can be, but why not try this year’s biggest trend and switch it up completely to moody and mysterious?

A rich, dark palette can add tremendous depth to a bedroom which creates a serene and calming atmosphere. Choose sultry grey and charcoal, midnight blues or rich burgundy to transform your room into a moody retreat. Here’s a few tips on how to pull off the dark colour scheme.

First off is to choose the right wall colour. The fundamental base of your décor relies on the colour in which the room is set. On-trend colours include charcoal, deep blue and emerald greens, which can be painted on all the walls in your room, or on an accent wall to slowly introduce the theme.

Next, is to try and match your big pieces of furniture such as your bed, as well as rugs and curtains to the same colour palette. A great way of adding a luxe feel to your room is to use different textures to add pockets of depth, such as a velvet upholstered headboard, textured curtains and a gorgeous patterned rug.

Finally, the piece de resistance in every bedroom – the bed. Here you’ll need to create a distinct contrast between light and dark colours. Choose beautiful crisp white linens, in 200 and 600 cotton thread count, or the coolest of Egyptian 300 thread count cotton, to ensure your bed is a stand-out feature in the room. When layering, make sure you choose accessories in the same dark colour palette, but remember to play with interesting textures such as a faux fur throw, a luxurious soft blanket, fluffy rugs and a variety of bold patterned and textured scatter cushions.
