What is a comforter?
A comforter set is a thick, quilted blanket used as the top blanket on a bed. They are filled with synthetic materials such as polyester or cotton blends. It is then quilted or stitched with a specific pattern to keep the material and inner secure and together.
Often used as an alternative to a duvet, a comforter set comes in bedding sets with matching pillow covers. These beautiful bed covers can offer different levels of warmth, with some being very thick and others lighter, ideal for warmer weather.
What's the difference between a duvet and a comforter?
A duvet is two pieces of fabric filled with down or synthetic fibre. Depending on the product, the materials inside the duvet might not be stitched or not as securely stitched as in a comforter. So there is an element of movement within the duvet. A duvet needs a duvet cover to protect it from daily use. A comforter has its inner materials stitched in place so the filling doesn't shift and move and does not need a separate duvet cover set for protection.
One of the major differences between a duvet and a comforter is that many duvets need to be sent to a dry cleaner to be cleaned. A comforter is simpler to clean – just pop it in the washing machine at home. The stitching on top of the bed cover will prevent the inner materials from shifting around in the wash, so you won't end up with all the material lumped in one corner.
A comforter doesn't require a cover over it – it is used as-is. For this reason, you shouldn't use it without a sheet. By adding a sheet layer between the comforter and your body, you protect the surface. A duvet, on the other hand, doesn't require a sheet under it. So, if you're not a fan of making your bed, a duvet offers a convenient solution – just pull your duvet over your bed.
Our range of comforters come in a wide range of colours and styles. Often a simple, solid colour is the best look for it - select beige, white and cream for a classic look in a neutral bedroom. Add a pop of colour with a bright scatter cushion or patterned blanket to inject some visual interest into the room. Plain duck egg blue or pink bed covers are feminine and fun alternatives.
Duvets are normally a bit smaller than comforters. A comforter will cover more of the bed, draping over the edges and almost brushing the floor. Just like a duvet set, it includes matching pillows. A three-quarter duvet and comforter set will include one pillow cover, were double, queen and king sets include two pillowcases.
